How to Use Face Oils Without Looking Greasy
Share
Face oils have a greasy reputation that's mostly undeserved — and entirely preventable. The problem is almost never the oil itself. It's the amount, the timing, and the application method.
Why Oils Feel Greasy
Oils applied to dry skin sit on top rather than absorbing because dry skin has a compromised ability to draw moisture (and oil) in. The oil pools on the surface. The fix is timing: apply oil to damp skin right after cleansing, when the skin is still slightly wet. The dampness helps the oil absorb rather than sit.
Use Far Less Than You Think
Two or three drops is enough for the entire face. Most people use 10–15 drops and wonder why they look oily. Warm the oil between your fingertips before pressing it into skin — heat helps it spread further and absorb faster. Don't rub. Press and pat.
When to Apply in Your Routine
Oils belong after water-based products (serums, toners) but before thicker creams or occlusives. The layering logic: water-based → oil-based. An oil applied before a serum blocks the serum from reaching the skin. An oil applied after a cream can't penetrate the cream layer either. The correct slot is: serum → oil → moisturizer (if you're using a cream on top), or serum → oil as the final PM step if the oil is rich enough to be your moisture seal.
Oils for Different Skin Types
Not all oils work for all skin types. The comedogenic rating (tendency to clog pores) matters if you're acne-prone:
- Low comedogenic (good for oily/acne-prone): Jojoba, hemp seed, squalane, rosehip
- Medium (fine for most skin): Argan, marula, sweet almond
- Higher (for dry/mature skin only): Coconut, wheat germ, flaxseed
Batana oil is a higher-density oil — better suited for dry, mature, or thick hair and skin than for oily or acne-prone types. The liquid batana oil on hair is more forgiving than on face skin; on body or very dry facial areas like cheeks or under-eye it can work well. The batana cream is easier to portion control.
The Right Technique Matters
- Cleanse, then pat skin until slightly damp (not dripping).
- Dispense 2–3 drops into your palm.
- Rub palms together to warm the oil.
- Press palms to your face and hold for 3–5 seconds. Do not rub.
- Tap any remaining oil into areas that need more moisture.
If You Still Look Greasy
Use less. Or switch to a lighter-weight oil (rosehip or squalane instead of batana or coconut). Or use it only in the PM when shine doesn't matter. Morning oiliness from skincare almost always comes down to using too much of something, not the product being wrong for you.
